Gardening Gets Social

Gardening Gets Social

Heather Corringe at Around the World in 80 Megabytes is conducting an experiment on social media. She’s working on putting together the first ever paper catalog using social media. What’s the subject of her catalog? Gardening related topics of course.
Heather’s looking for “how to” articles, new product ideas, product reviews and more. I just found her post on the subject today, her deadline is the 30th. If you have something that would fit drop her a line. Sounds like an interesting project.

We love compost at our house. When you garden organically whenever possible like I do compost is a precious commodity. Fresh compost is the best thing you can do for your soil.
I try to keep the compost burning hot all summer. We throw all our kitchen vegetable, and fruit scraps, egg shells, and coffee grinds. We also add cow manure, grass clippings and leaves. Deb Ng has some great videos posted at Simply Thrifty on How to Compost. Hop on over and check them out.

Live Christmas Tree Care

Are you thinking about getting a living tree for Christmas this year? If you get a dug, and balled Christmas tree here are a few tips to ensure your tree will live through the new year.
When you purchase your tree leave it in an unheated but sheltered spot. If you want to be able to plant your tree after Christmas, go ahead and dig a hole. Save the dirt from the hole in a trash bag stored in a dry place. This will keep the soil from freezing when the weather turns cold.
About 10 days before Christmas place your tree …read more

Make A Pine Cone Topiary

Make A Pine Cone Topiary

I saw this idea somewhere a couple years ago, and I decided to make my own pine cone topiary for my fireplace mantle. It was really simple to make. I whitewashed a clay pot, it would also look great sponge painted. You could probably use a fancier pot if you wanted to invest in it. I was just trying to use things I already had around the house.
I cut a small Styrofoam ball in  half then slid it into the flower pot. I picked up several sticks from the yard, then used the one that was the best fit. We …read more

Want To Improve Your Soil Next Spring?

If you want to improve your soil’s condition for next summer’s garden season, now is a great time to start. Here are three great ways to get started improving your soil for next summer.
1. Pile leaves on your garden, and water or dig them in. The leaves will mold and rot over winter into a great soil enricher by spring.
2. Plant a cover crop. It’s not too late in the southern areas to get a cover crop started before the snow flies. It may not get a great start this fall, but it will take off in the spring. Some …read more

Enki Watering System- For the Gardener Who Has Everything?

Enki Watering System- For the Gardener Who Has Everything?

Do you have a gardener on your list who has everything? Check out this new Enki watering can. It’s supposed to add oxygen to the water you give your plants. What does this do? It improves your plant’s root growth, and gives you bigger blooms with higher yields.
It’s an interesting concept. The watering system adds oxygen to normal tap water when you plug it into a wall outlet for 4-5 minutes. The oxygen stays in the water for several hours.
According to Ovation Science the company that makes this new watering system the Enki has been tested on petunias, geraniums, …read more

Geraniums as Houseplants

Geraniums as Houseplants

I love geraniums they’re one of my favorite flowers in the garden, but they’re also one of my favorite houseplants.
I have a pink geranium in my living room window that blooms all year round, even in the winter months.
I also love scented geraniums. I have a citrus scented geranium in my kitchen. Every time I walk by and brush up against it I get the scent of citrus.  Sometimes I grab a few leaves just to smell the wonderful scent.
My favorite scented geranium is a chocolate scented geranium, it has a chocolaty-citrus scent, yum.
I put most of my geranium plants …read more

Donate Your Garden Extras

Donate Your Garden Extras

With the cost of living up, and the number of donations to food banks steadily decreasing in the last few years many food kitchens are low on funds and food this year. Don’t forget about the poor and hungry during this holiday season.
In many areas draught has decreased the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables available. Increasing the cost of these precious commodities. If you have excess end of season vegetables available, contact your local food kitchen to see if they’d like a fresh donation.
If your garden is done for the year, consider donating a few dollars, or some canned …read more
