Moving

There comes a time in every blogger’s life that no matter how hard they try to avoid it, they are cut off from the online world. It’s frustrating, and annoying, and darn hard to stay in touch with things! I’m finding myself in this boat at the moment. We have moved all our things into a new apartment, but won’t have the internet hooked up for another week. So bear with me, and rest assured that Mother Earth’s Garden will begin posting again soon! In the mean time I’ll be preparing some great posts for …read more

Natalie Portman Helps Save the Planet

Natalie Portman Helps Save the Planet

I already use daylight bulbs and fluorescent lights in my house, mostly because they use less electricity, and provide a lot more light than regular bulbs. But after watching this video of Natalie Portman and some other big stars explaining how it can help reduce green house emissions and help save the world, I think I’ll go buy a few for my neighbors. Watch the video to see how just using one of these bulbs can help.

Fresh Start

Fresh Start

I find myself in a strange predicament. We are moving next week, and while this is definitely good news, I’m torn. I’m at a loss to figure out what to do with my gardens. My container garden is fairly easy, I can take that with me, but finding spots with the same amount of sun may be a bit tricky. The real delima is what I’m going to do for the rest of the season with my in ground gardens. We live in an apartment, so mostly the gardens are else where to begin with. …read more

Mark of a True Gardener

Mark of a True Gardener

No matter how hard I try, I can’t every seem to keep my hands clean for more than a day. My nails are a manicurist’s worst nightmare. I used to try and get all the dirt out from under my nails, but then I realized that it was pointless, since I was only going to get them dirty again. It’s the price I pay for gardening and I wear my dirt with pride! So, I’ve decided we are going to celebrate this mark of a true gardener. Show us your hands! Send me …read more

Keeping Snails and Slugs Out of Your Garden

Keeping Snails and Slugs Out of Your Garden

I’ve never had much problem with slugs and snails, until this guy showed up literally on my door step last night. At first I thought that some of the stray cats that frequent our porch had left me a smelly present, but then I realized it was a giant slug! And he was crawling strait toward my container garden! My first instinct was to kill him, since a slug so big would probably finish off my plants in one night. But it was just so darn cool looking, that I couldn’t bring my self to kill …read more

Compliments to the Chef/Gardener

Compliments to the Chef/Gardener

I harvested the first of my corn and made it with dinner last night. My husband took one bite and tuned to me and said “This is the best corn I’ve ever tasted!” High compliments to both the gardener and cook in me. I only had four ears and he was disappointed that he would have to wait for more! Feel free to share some recipes or compliments for your harvest!

Preparing for a Storm: Don’t Over Do It

Preparing for a Storm: Don’t Over Do It

I live in central Ohio, so we get all kinds of weather traveling on our jet stream over head. The temperature fluctuation and sudden storms wreak havoc on my plants. When I have the luxury of knowing of a storm ahead of time, I group all my container plants together in a corner of my porch. The more fragile ones, or the ones with lighter pots I put toward the middle. This is about all I do. We’ve never had a storm fierce enough to do permanent damage to my in ground plants, but I do tie them down if …read more

How to Prepare a Wooden Planter

How to Prepare a Wooden Planter

Using wooded containers and planters in your garden can be a very attractive addition to your garden. But over time, usually one season, if not properly conditioned, the wood can deteriorate and loose its attractiveness. Here’s some easy steps to preparing your wooden containers for planting outdoors.

First and foremost, decided on what type of weather proofing and wood conditioner you will use. There are plant safe, low chemical wood sealers that can be found at your local garden center, but they must be re-applied regularly about every three to four months. Commercial type sealers last longer, but you will have …read more
