Watering Tip 2

Watering Tip 2

With Summer heat, and longer periods of sun, even vegetation that requires full sun can start to wilt. It’s very easy to over water your plants during this time, and unfortunately over watering and under watering usually have the same symptoms in plants. Wilting, or fading can also be a sign that your plants have been watered too much. Just because the soil is dry on the top, it may still be very wet on the bottom, especially in larger pots. The best solution to this problem is to get an inexpensive water meter at your …read more

Communing with Nature

Communing with Nature

One of my favorite activities in the world, is kayaking. Not because it’s great exercise, which it is, but because you reach a spot where there are no other kayaks around, the water is fairly smooth, no roads near by, and you can just lie back and drift. It’s probably one of the most peaceful experiences in the world. Water lapping gently against the sides. Clouds drifting overhead. If you’ve never been kayaking, I highly encourage you to do so sometime. It’s usually about the same as going to a movie cost wise, and …read more

Successful Transplant!

Successful Transplant!

I recently decided to transplant a couple of the ferns that grow around my vegetable garden. This picture is of the ferns in their original spot. I’ve planted one large in a pot on my porch, and one small one for my husband’s desk. So far both seem to be adjusting quite well to the change. The temperature and amount of sun is roughly the same in both places, so hopefully it won’t be too much of a shock to the ferns! Feel free to share some successful, and not so successful transplants you have tried …read more

Creative Gift Idea

Creative Gift Idea

Looking for that gift for the hard to buy for person? How about a personalized potted plant? I found this nifty little pot in a clearance isle at Wal-Mart. Simply plant your house plant and write a personal message in chalk. When your done, just spray it with fixative or hair spray to keep it from rubbing off. Or, you can forget the hair spray, include some chalk and a little eraser, and create a living message board! I’m thinking of making one for myself! If you’re worried about the plant being high …read more

Giant Tomatoes

Giant Tomatoes

I can honestly say that I have never seen tomato plants get this big. I went to my vegetable garden after I came back from vacation to find that it had grown to four feet tall! I had to tie it up to the fence since the stakes I had were only two and half feet! My other four tomato plants are all of normal size, the next tallest barely being three feet. I’m expecting lots of good tomatoes from this one!

Meijer – Saving the Planet One Plant at a Time

Meijer – Saving the Planet One Plant at a Time

I recently discovered that Meijer stores are working with the Nature Conservancy in an effort to promote non-invasive plants for gardeners. Even if you just plant one, some plants can spread their seeds to the out lying area and kill off naturally growing plants. All plants that are non-invasive and safe for the environment have been marked with special tags. Go check out your local Meijer garden center and start looking for other garden centers that sell non-invasive environmentally friendly plants.

Lucky Garden

Lucky Garden

While weeding my vegetable garden, I spotted this lucky clover just inside the fence. Guess this means I’ll have a great crop this year!

First Fruits

First Fruits

This little Cherry Tomato is the first vegetable from my garden! This is the first vegetable patch I’ve planted and tended myself. Usually I’m only helping in someone else’s garden. Not quite sure what to do with this tomato. I suppose I should eat it, but that seems harsh. I tended and watered it, and now it’s all grown up!

In the Path of Hummingbirds

In the Path of Hummingbirds

My Uncle Bryan sent me these amazing pictures in an email. This lady lives in a Hummingbird migration zone. When they flew through, she decided to try holding some sugar water in her hand and see what happened. I’ve never seen Hummingbirds get this close to people!

Watering Tip

Watering Tip

Any time you water a plant, especially one in a container, pouring directly onto the soil can expose roots and keep water from spreading evenly through the soil. If you’ve had this problem, then instead of pouring water directly on the soil, try pouring it onto broken terra cotta pieces. I use a chunk of a broken coffee mug, and you can also use a medium size river stone. Any thing with a smooth, fairly even surface. Also water from all sides, and avoid water right next to the base of the plant. This will …read more
